Tips
Broadband
If you want to share your broadband connection, the best method is to purchase a
broadband wireless router with integral modem (approx £40) and set up a home network.
(The inclusion of a modem is important unless you are a cable customer!)
This will act as a gateway for one or several laptops/PCs to gain simultaneous access to the internet.
If you have a modern PC you will probably be able to connect to the router with a network cable through an ethernet port.
If this is not possible you can purchase a NIC or wireless card (approx £15 - £20).
Likewise with a laptop. However, most modern laptops will have an ethernet connection and WIFI onboard.
You will also be able to share files and printers if you so wish.
Security is always an issue and really comes to the fore when you have wireless access.
You should ensure that you setup strong encryption on your router.
This will minimise the chances of your connection being hijacked.
Wireless range is another aspect which should be taken into account.
Buildings with thick walls and/or lots of metal can severely affect the range/quality of the wireless connection.
If there are several users utilising the same connection you will notice a change in internet speed if one or more users:-
- Frequently download large files. e.g MP3s, videos, programs etc.
- Emails containing large attachments
- Visited web sites are image rich or use large amounts of flash
- Have a large number of updates to install
If you would like us to setup your home network it will cost approx £30 if you live within the area specified on the contact page.
